… I wanted to give a little birthday present! Nothing big, but something that shows it comes from the heart. Unfortunately, I realised that there are knitting patterns for only a very few small items. Crochet patterns, yes – there are an incredible number of them, and an incredible number of cute ones too – but unfortunately I can’t really crochet; the basics, yes, but nothing more than that.
Then, luckily, I came across the free knitting pattern for a bookmark made by Drops. The Library Mouse – a knitted bookmark in the shape of a mouse with stripes. I thought it was a good idea, and their photos were absolutely adorable, so I thought to myself, ‘I’ll at least give it a try…’
Because whilst I have absolutely no problem understanding the shapes that paper patterns create on the body, or how to construct a knitted jumper so that it fits well, I’ve never really looked into ‘shapes’ before. But then again, instructions are meant to guide you step by step through a process like this. So I just went ahead and gave it a go.
I did, however, use some leftover sock yarn; I still had some plain-coloured yarn and some leftover striped yarn, and I really liked the combination of the two.
Well… it didn’t get off to a particularly great start, hehehe. I definitely needed a go or two to get the hang of it, but then it worked out. The instructions are easy to follow and it was fun to work through them. I could definitely practice on the ears a bit more – I’m not really happy with them yet – but what can I say, picking up 15 stitches from a single stitch (using a 2.5 needle)… wow, I really did bend my fingers a bit doing that! 😉
And here it is, a different kind of bookmark:
